The demand for affordable, safe and decent homes still outweighs the available supply, causing many families to face extremely difficult choices between affording their home or other basic needs. Now is the time to urge your members of Congress to act to revitalize distressed communities through the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act and vital housing and community development federal programs in the fiscal year 2024 budget.

Message:

There is a historic low supply of affordable homes in every state. As your constituent and a Habitat for Humanity supporter, I urge Congress to prioritize policies that will increase the number of affordable homes, especially for homeownership opportunities and for low-income families. To start, I ask that you: 1.	Support the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act, bipartisan legislation that will revitalize distressed neighborhoods by using federal tax credits to mobilize private investment to build and substantially rehabilitate homes for low- and moderate-income homeowners.   2.	Support robust funding for vital housing and community development federal programs in the fiscal year 2024 budget. FY2024 requests: HUD •	Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) – $20 million •	HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) – $2.5 billion USDA •	Section 502 Direct Loan Program – $1.5 billion Home affordability is a top concern for families nationwide. The demand for affordable, safe and healthy homes far outweighs the available supply causing many families to face extremely difficult choices between how to afford their housing and other basic needs. I believe low-income families deserve the opportunity to own a home and build wealth. If we want to close our nation’s stark racial wealth gap, homeownership must be made accessible to communities of color long disadvantaged by housing discrimination. More affordable homes must be produced nationwide not only to bring down housing costs to be within reach for families, but also to lower overall inflation. Therefore, I urge Congress to support a strong federal investment in affordable housing to help expand access to homeownership and offset the rising costs associated with building and rehabilitating affordable homes. These are key priorities for improving home affordability through Habitat’s five-year Cost of Home advocacy campaign.
