Call on Congress to invest in affordable homeownership supply

The need for affordable, safe and healthy homes exceeds the available supply, causing many families to face extremely difficult choices between affording their home or other basic needs. Now is the time to urge your members of Congress to act to increase the supply of affordable homes for homeownership and revitalize distressed communities through the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act and vital housing and community development federal programs in the fiscal year 2025 budget.

Message:

There is a historic low supply of entry-level affordable homes in every state that is driving up costs. As your constituent and a Habitat for Humanity supporter, I urge Congress to act and prioritize policies that will increase the number of affordable homes, especially for entry-level homeownership. You can start by immediately supporting: 1.	Robust funding for vital housing and community development federal programs in the fiscal year 2025 budget. •	Department of Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD bill): o	 Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program — $20 million o	HOME Investment Partnerships Program — $2.5 billion •	Department of Agriculture (Ag-Rural Development bill): o	USDA Section 502 Direct Loan Program — $1.5 billion 2.	The Neighborhood Homes Investment Act as a cosponsor. This bipartisan legislation will revitalize distressed neighborhoods by using federal tax credits to mobilize private investment to build and substantially rehabilitate homes for low- and moderate-income homeowners. • H.R.3940 and S.657 Home affordability is a top concern for families nationwide. The demand for affordable, safe and healthy homes far exceeds the available supply, particularly the supply of starter homes priced affordably for lower-income families and first-time homebuyers. This causes many families to face extremely difficult choices between how to afford their housing and other basic needs like food, healthcare and childcare. Communities of all sizes nationwide are experiencing a historic loss of affordable homeownership opportunities. This is a dire situation for low-income families because no investment is as beneficial as homeownership for wealth building. More affordable homes must be produced nationwide not only to bring down housing costs to be within reach for families, but also to encourage economic growth. Therefore, I urge Congress to support a strong federal investment in affordable housing to help expand access to homeownership and offset the rising costs associated with building and rehabilitating affordable homes. It’s also important to note that Habitat is a global organization working in 70 countries around the world and is focused on working with countries, including the U.S., to increase access to adequate housing for the more than 1.1 billion people living in informal settlements globally.
